Clothing Drive

Mrs. Solomon and some students (Patrick Wheat, Chiara Tondi Resta, etc.) have set up a clothing drive that will be running over the next few weeks. All types of clothing are being accepted and there is a box in my room that you can drop off anything that you bring. The clothes are specifically going to the Inspire Agency to be distributed to those in need. Please support this cause.

History in Pop Culture Extra Credit

I believe I've been hinting at this extra credit assignment since early last semester. Well... here it is! Click here to access the instructions for the History in Pop Culture assignment. This extra credit opportunity is due on Friday, February 26th and can earn you up to 50 points on a quiz! I hope that many of you take advantage of this opportunity. There's one catch though... there can be no repeated assignments. So, once you've got a topic for your assignment, post a comment on the blog to stake your claim to that instance of pop culture and I'll let you know if it's acceptable or not. Have fun!

Socratic Discussion #2

On Thursday, February 4th, we will be having our second in-class Socratic discussion. This seminar will be used to debate issues from the Enlightenment, such as the nature of man and the proper ways to govern citizens of a nation. As these were some of the same issues being discussed in the eighteenth century coffeehouses and salons, we will do our best to simulate that environment. This means, students should come to class dressed in professional attire (extra credit opportunity). Also, students are encouraged to bring to class their favorite [preferably caffeinated] beverage to stimulate conversation. Click here to access the grading rubric for Thursday's discussion.

Post-Writing Activity: Write two paragraphs in regards to our discussion today. Focus your writing on the nature of man and the responsibilities of governments to society. This assignment is due Friday, February 5th at the beginning of class.

Enlightenment and American Revolution Quiz

There will be a quiz in class on Thursday, February 4th over the Enligthenment (Prelude to Revolution) and the American Revolution.

Extra Credit Film Review

On Thursday, February 4th, there will be an extra credit film screening of Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette." The screening will run from 3:45 until 5:45pm. For 10 points on a test, students will be required to turn in a typed historical film analysis to be due on Thursday, February 11th.

Questions to guide the film review:

How does the film relate to the historical events we discussed in class?

What transformations did Marie go through as the film progressed? Why?

How did the film portray life at Versailles?

What was the reaction of the nobility to the violent protests of the Parisians?

Extra Credit Opportunity

There will be an extra credit opportunity after school on Wednesday, February 3rd. For 25 points on a quiz, students will be required to view a screening of the History Channel's "The French Revolution" and answer a series of questions related to the documentary. The film will be shown from 3:45 until 5:25pm.
