1918 Influenza Epidemic
In 4th period today, a heated debate ensued between Benschine and Coff. The winner? I'm leaning towards Ben :) Here are a few articles I found while further researching the topic. Overall, the arguements are a little at odds with one another. One article actually puts American deaths at a lowly 675,000. The other claims total calamity at almost 100,000,000 deaths overall. Wow! Wikipedia's version seems a bit skewed though, as it references both of these articles, it also seems to include numbers from the encephalitis lethargica that his in 1920. In the end, I'd say that looking at the flu from a worldview and examining its lasting effects into the 1920s (and its spread into Southeast Asia), our textbook is really low-balling the number. If you're examing the dates 1918-1919, I'd guess probably only 30 or 40 million, but that number surely grew exponentially in 1920 with the outbreak of cases. In either case, I'm babbling too much. Read for yourselves and decide.

Date Corrections
Ok, a few changes since I misunderstood the schedule for this week when I posted the original test/study session/extra credit dates. Here's what's going on:
Tuesday: Study session from 7:45am - 8:15am; Study session during 8th period
Wednesday: 7th period multiple-choice exam; chapter 27 guided reading (optional) due; no morning study session
Thursday: 2nd, 4th and 6th period multiple-choice exam; chapter 27 guided reading (optional) due
Friday: In-class dbq (all periods)

Study Session Tomorrow
Remember, the unit 4 study session is tomorrow from 10am until 1pm. We will be in Mr. Ghassemian's room. He's located one floor below my classroom. I think the room number is something link E105, but I'm not positive. Please do not go to the second floor tomorrow because SAT testing will be going on. See you tomorrow.

Chapter 26 and 27 Announcements
As we are now preparing for the unit 4 test, I realize that schedules (yours and mine) are quickly filling. Therefore, there will not be a quiz over chapters 26 or 27 and the chapter 27 guided reading will be optional. To provide a little motivation to complete the chapter 27 guided reading, I'll make it an extra credit assignment worth 50 quiz points. If you choose to complete the chapter 27 guided reading, it will be due at the beginning of the class on Wednesday, March 17th (2nd, 4th & 6th period) and Thursday, March 18th (7th period).
